4/27/2023 0 Comments Dreamfall chapters soundtrack![]() It's part of a bigger debate - one I have VERY strong opinions on, opinions I'm entitled to have - that's becoming more and more heated. No one did it because they want to destroy us or hurt us. No one attacked us simply to be an asshole. ![]() Why would it? We're part of the same team of creatives trying to get by in a world that doesn't pay nearly enough for what we do!īut since we're a company - and a company that raised $1.5 MILLION on Kickstarter - and because we don't have a lot of artistic cred yet, we reignited an endless debate and became an easy target for frustrated creatives across the industry. We totally get it…which is why we had NO idea this would blow up in our faces. I think people forget (or maybe don't know?) that we're a company consisting of mostly artists, mostly starving artists, and mostly artists who have had to do a bunch of stuff for free in their lives, and who are as fed up with being treated like worthless dirt by Big Corporate Bads as anyone out there. ![]() I think a lot of people misunderstood our intentions and message some don't know who we are and simply expect us to be leaches and parasites and some use us as a convenient - and easy - target in what has become a heated and passionate debate about a controversial issue. Oh, I don't think anyone deserves to be boycotted. In response to someone asking for the names of the artists that were causing trouble so they could be boycotted by fans of Dreamfall, Ragnar Tornquist, basically the head honcho of Red Thread Games, had this to say: I find this comment in the forums encouraging. I want Dreamfall: Chapters to be a great project, led by passionate people who are feeling happy with the work they do, not beaten down by an unruly mob. Ragnar said on his post that he and the team have been hit hard by this, and that makes me very sad. Yes, they'll be making money off of the game, but so what? Just like fan art, the competition was a gift to fans who had followed and loved the project for a long time, and now nobody gets anything. I would love it if my work were to end up in there in that fashion, and wouldn't expect compensation for it, as it's an act of love for the project. Creating fan art and music is an act of passion for the project, and there are many passionate people who love the series, like myself. I think this reaction harms fans immensely. The post said that, aside from the negative backlash online, some people were professionally threatening members of the team (i.e., not violent threats, but something to do with their careers), which is a big reason they cancelled it. ![]() Like the fan art competition that was held for Dreamfall: Chapters not long ago, this was much the same.īut it seems the issue of artists being paid for their work has reached a fever pitch, where even well-meaning developers that seem to care about their fans are caught up in an issue larger than themselves. More than that though, he's never struck me as someone looking to exploit anyone's creative work. I am also a Kickstarter backer for Dreamfall: Chapters, so you can see that I do support him. I've been reading lead designer Ragnar Tornquist's blog and writings for years, and am a big fan of his work on TLJ/Dreamfall. My two cents are this is a tempest in a teapot. Ignoring the fact that TLJ's publisher Funcom had a competition for The Secret World involving fan music not that long before without any issue whatsoever. Within less than a day, there was a huge backlash against it from professional musicians who claimed the competition was trying to exploit musicians by not offering compensation. The music competition was simple: fans can submit their music and, if chosen, they will be included in the game as background (playing over radios and the like in a few scenes on random, like in TLJ). You can find the post about it here, and the official forum thread right here.ĭreamfall: Chapters, for those who don't know, is a sequel to Dreamfall, which in turn was a sequel to The Longest Journey (TLJ), one of the crown jewels of the adventure genre.
